Part III

Taking Losses

Why are so many people in a rush to try again before they have even understood what the loss had to teach them?

In this series, I am taking a deeper look at the different things that move us and how they show up in real life. Each part is built around a different kind of motivation through my own lens, with the hope that it also gets you thinking about what drives you. If you missed the earlier parts, or want to read the other series I have written in the past, you can find them on my homepage.

Most people talk about winning like it is the main thing that keeps them going. That makes sense. A win feels good. It rewards the effort, brings relief, and gives you something to build on.

But losing has its own kind of power.

Losses motivate me because they pull something out of me that wins usually do not. They get my attention fast. They make me slow down and look at what really happened. A good outcome can boost your confidence, but a setback has a way of exposing the parts that still need work.

I think a lot of people move too fast after taking a hit. They want another shot right away, almost like speed will fix what went wrong. Sometimes the better move is to pull everything back in first. Look at what worked or did not.
Sit with the result long enough to understand it before stepping back into the same fire.

That is where a lot of people lose themselves. You hear someone say they tried three times, failed three times, and finally gave up.
What you do not always hear is how much reflection happened between those attempts.
How much did they actually study what went wrong?
How much did they adjust?
Repeating effort is NOT the same thing as growing from it.

Let’s get back to the series…

I am not saying I win all the time either. I take my losses dead on the chin.
It hurts, yeah, but I would rather face that honestly than pretend it did not matter.
That is part of my process.
I take the hit, gather what it taught me, and if I decide to go again,
and I come back from a place of experience.

That approach matters. A setback can humble you, sharpen you, and make you more honest about your timing, your preparation, and your blind spots. It can show you whether you are truly improving or just eager to say you did not quit.

That is why losses keep me motivated. They do not make me want to fold. They make me want to understand, regroup, and return with better awareness of what the moment actually requires.

Some losses hurt, but the ones you learn from can shape a stronger version of you for whatever comes next.
