Part 2
The excuse that kept me parked
Have you ever stayed somewhere too long because you already knew how the day would go?
The Fear Series exists because fear rarely shows up as panic for me, it shows up as “reasonable.”
This series is me exposing the deals I have made with fear through my own experiences, because fear has a way of dressing itself up in logic and slipping into your decision-making without ever raising its voice. When you can name it, you can catch it earlier. When you can catch it earlier, you stop letting it run your life in the background.
Part 2 is about the excuse that held me back the longest: the comfort of what I already knew.
I told myself I was being smart, and I chose predictability for way longer than I should have. I stayed because I knew the rules, the rhythm, and how to move through it without making a mess.
I understood what to ignore, what to tolerate, and what to handle quietly so life still looked steady from the outside. Predictability can feel like control, especially when you have already survived enough chaos to stop craving “new.”
After a while, the script starts choosing for you.
It shows up as a clean explanation that sounds good in conversation.
“Timing”, “responsibility”, “waiting until things are right”.

The explanation stays neat, and the reality gets messy, because you start building a life around what you can manage instead of what you actually want.
Nothing about it feels dramatic in the moment.
It just feels normal.
Then time passes, and one day you realize you have been adapting to a situation that never deserved that much patience from you.
You realize you have been staying in places you did not even want to be in, simply because you already knew how to survive there.
Underneath it, the fear was simple, and it kept repeating itself.
I was scared to fail.
I was scared of taking a step that forced a verdict
Scared of taking a swing and coming up short.
Scared of the version of failure that comes with an audience, where you have to eat humble pie after, and you cannot even explain how heavy the decision was before you made it.
That fear made the predictable path feel valuable.
It protected my ego and my image. It let me keep looking competent, even on days when I felt restless, bored, and even irritated that I was still there.
The longer you live inside something you can manage, the more it starts to look like stability, even when it is just habit.
The craziest part is that fear do not disappear when things finally start going well.
It shows up during wins because wins put you closer to being seen. They raise expectations and creates pressure to keep going, and pressure has a way of waking up old excuses that used to work.
Even now, that mindset still tries to offer the same deal. Keep it predictable and you can avoid the embarrassment of coming up short. Stay in what you know and you can avoid the public lesson that comes after a public attempt.
That is the battle for me. Fear keeps updating the language, but the offer stays the same.

Part 3 is where I walk through one leap of faith I took while my mind offered me every “reasonable” reason to stay put, and what happened after I chose movement without having the comfort of certainty.
